Women in Psychology Essay Inez Beverly Posser (1895-1934) was America’s first Black female psychologist. Not only is this significant in itself, it is also the adversity she overcame growing up to get there. And later, in the profound research in her dissertation that caused controversy as well as groundbreaking discoveries regarding education and integration vs. segregation as it relates to psychology. Inez was born into a family with 10 other siblings where she attended â€Å"schools for colored† in Texas. Since her family was poor, it was decided early on that they could only afford to send the oldest child (a son named Leon) to college, and once graduated that he would pave the way financially to help his siblings to attend college. However, it was apparent that Inez’s desire to attend college was greater than her brothers. Leon realized this and persuaded his parents to send her to college instead. Inez attended a historically black college at Prairie View AM University. With a two year certificate she began to teach elementary school and then worked as a teacher at a high school. (this teaching experience, I’m sure, will prove influential in her later research topic, where she addressed segregated vs. integrated public schools). She went on to finish her Bachelors Degree at Samuel Houston college in 1926. To attend graduate school she was forced to leave Texas due to segregation. Undeterred, she completed her Master’s degree at the University of Colorado and in 1933 she received her PhD in psychology at the University of Cincinnati. The first female African American to achieve this degree. What makes Inez a pioneer in psychology was the fact that she was the first female African American to earn her PhD in psychology in America. Coupled with her research and study of segregated vs. integrated schools, of which she did her dissertation. Her conclusions  from that research, caused much controversy with the citizens as well as amongst her peers. (para 6) It is in this research where she concluded that black school children fare far better in black schools than they do in integrated schools. Her findings were controversial in their time. It is interesting to note that her conclusions of this study came decades before the Brown vs. Board of Education Court decision in 1954. In fact, even before the Civil Rights movement took hold across the country. (online: Civil Rights Timeline, authors: Brunner Haney, 2007). She had some support from other prominent African American figures of that time. One of those prominent figures that reluctantly agreed with her research was W.E.B. Dubois, believing that until the prejudicial attitudes of the white teachers against black students changed, only then would integrated schools be a positive environment for black students. (Americas First Black Female Psychologist,† 2008, p.1 para 6) In her research, through a psychological perspective, she examined self-esteem and personality variables in the African American middle school students attending integrated schools, and the African American middle school students attending segregated schools in the Cincinnati area. In her conclusion she found that black children in schools with black classmates being taught by black teachers fared far better than the students alike in the integrated schools. Even more astounding, â€Å"she found that the children from the integrated schools experienced more social maladjustment, felt less secure in their social relations, and had less satisfactory relations with their families. They were also more likely to feel inferior at school, had less satisfactory relationships with their teachers and were more eager to leave school early.†( Americas First Black Female Psychologist,† 2008, p.1 para.5). Why did Inez’s research and conclusion cause such controversy? There are many  different views that can be drawn on the research and conclusions. First, since Inez was African American herself, this may have conflicted within her African American community. Why? Since African Americans have been struggling for equal rights and equality in education, this would seem to go against what her own race has been struggling to achieve. On the surface it would appear that way. However, her research was from a psychological perspective that had not yet been considered or researched. Ironically, her conclusions in her study in her dissertation could also be useful as the topic of desegregation that did not come along until decades after her study. The question that was answered even before its time, is how desegregation would effect the students themselves. Would this have a positive or negative effect on their education? If equality was to be reached in the public school system wouldn’t this have to also mean that the African American students would also fare better than in integrated schools? What’s the use in achieving desegregation if it is going to have such a negative impact on the African American students? If you will notice, the word â€Å"integrated† is used in place of â€Å"desegregation† in her study since desegregation had not yet even been addressed! As you can imagine, many different views, arguments, and psychological perspectives can be drawn from Inez’s research and conclusions on integrated schools vs. segregated schools. Hence, any time a psychological study can stir controversy, arguments, or ideas within the psychology community, that in itself proves it is a study of great significance! At a time when prejudice ran deep, where women were trying to gain equality, and segregation was still in force; most citizens would not even consider or given much thought on such a controversial topic as segregation vs. integration. Nor was there ever any studies, that I am aware of, as to how it affects the students themselves. Inez was way beyond her time in not  only her acceptance as a psychologist by her peers, but in her dissertation where she voiced her results of the study. She was a pioneer for Black women in the field of psychology. Sadly, Inez’s life was cut short in a tragic car crash near Shreveport, La. after returning from a visit with her family in Texas. She was 38 years old at the time of her death. (An approximation, since her actual birth date is unknown) Thankfully, she was able to help six of her siblings financially to attend college, and was instrumental in helping many black students in gaining college funds for college and graduate school. (para 8) Since her untimely death at such a young age, it begs one to wonder, how much more she could have contributed to the field of psychology? The inscription on her tombstone reads: â€Å"How Many Hopes Lie Buried Here†. I guess this is a question that is the sentiment of many. Afterthought In reading her conclusions of her research, coupled with a previous experience, I can see that this makes sense: Coming from an all white school myself growing up, it was only when I entered high school did I encounter one black student who attended our school. I later befriended him and he explained to me that he came from an â€Å"all Black† school, but due to a move from an â€Å"all Black† area, he was transferred here. He voiced his feelings of inferiority. Not only did he feel he did not â€Å"fit in†, he wanted to go back to the â€Å"all Black† school. What is significant to mention is that he was also well behind his classmates in his studies when he arrived at the high school. This is important because it makes it clear that the â€Å"all Black† school was inferior in the education he was receiving. Since he started out behind the rest of the students, it was a constant struggle to get his grades even up to a C. This seems to conclude that the Black schools coupled with poorer neighborhoods tend to lack in the better education that is offered in the all white, upper class neighborhoods. That in itself is an inequality that I observed through this student. Despite the fact that he knew this school afforded him a better education than he was receiving, he still did \not want to be here and wanted to go back to his old school where he â€Å"fit in†. As I read Inez’s conclusion, through my experience with my Black friend, I feel it further enforced her findings.

The Charles Manson Murders English Literature Essay Charles Manson was very persuasive but also very much deranged. His claim to fame was that he was able to seduce many women and control them just as well. He knew enough about crime and its intricacies due to the many years he spent in jail and his frequent reappearances therein. He would develop a great amount of knowledge due his inmates help. This knowledge, along with his desires to control and annihilate, help his groupies to kill his victims. Gary Hinman, was a music teacher working on a Ph.D. in Sociology at UCLA. On July 25, 1969, Manson sent the Family members Mary Brunner, Susan Atkins, and Bobby Beausoleil to hustle money from him. There are two different possible reasons for Manson murdering Hinman. The first reason may be related to a bad drug buy. The second reason might have something to do with Hinman possibly inheriting $21,000-the obvious assumption that Manson wanted that money. Whatever the case, Hinman refused to turn over his money. Manson, along with Bruce Davis, joined the other family members who were currently with Hinman to convince him of letting his money go. However, an argument happened and Manson cut off Hinmans ear with a sword. Manson and Davis left stealing one of Hinmans cars, along the way. When Manson left he told the other Family members not to let him go till he gives up the money. Hinman was held captive for two days, after which he was stabbed to death. The killing was ordered by Manson , after he found that he was unpliable. To throw the police off their track, the Family devised a way to make it seem as if the Black Panthers killed Hinman. They wrote the words Political Piggy on the wall, just above his body, in his blood, along with a bloody paw print. On August 6, 1969, Bobby Beausoleil was arrested for Hinmans murder after the police had found him driving one of Hinmans stolen cars. However, due to similarly enacted crimes, by the Family, Beausoleil was released from prison. On the night of August 8, 1969, Charles Watson, Susan, Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, and Linda Kasabian were told, by Charles Manson, to go to the home of Terry Melcher at 10050 Cielo Drive. His instructions were specific-they were to kill everyone at the house and make it similar to the Hinman murder, with words and symbols written in blood on the walls. The members did what they told and killed Steven Parent, Jay Sebring, Wojciech Frykowski, Abigail Folger, Sharon Tate, and Sharon Tates unborn child. On August 9, 1969, the next day, Manson, Charles Watson, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, Steve Grogan, Leslie Van Houten, and Linda Kasabian went to Leno and Rosemary LaBiancas home. Charles Manson went with Watson to tie up the couple. Manson then left and told Van Houten and Linda Kasabian to kill the LaBiancas. Watson, Van Houten, and Kasabian separated the couple and murdered them. They then had dinner, showered, and hitchhiked all the way back to Spahn Ranch (the Familys home base, if you will). Afterwards, Manson, Atkins, Grogan, and Kasabian drove around trying to look for others to kill. They did not, however, and retreated back home. Charles Manson and his Family were brought in on charges of auto theft. However, they ended up getting released due to an invalid date error on the search warrant. Manson blamed the Familys arrest on Donald Shea for supposedly snitching. Shorty did want the family off the ranch which was definitely the truth. After their arrest Manson decided to leave Spahn Ranch move to Barker Ranch near Death Valley. Before they left, though, Manson, Bruce Davis, Charles Watson, and Steve Grogan killed Shorty and buried his body behind the Spahn Ranch. Charles Manson was born into a very tumultuous household. His mother a prostitute he had no one stable household. He never knew his father and his mother cared little for the child she had born out of greed. Manson was thusly placed into foster care where he was to be left on his own for most of his life. His mother, at one point, beat the young Manson for his money. Upon which he beat his own mother back. His mother would frequently have sex with both men and women in front of him. Men were introduced to him as Uncles. She would always run from trouble and was always broke. Manson and his mother would stay in run-down hotel rooms without food or proper necessities. Manson hardly went to school, and dropped out by the age of nine. When Manson was placed into foster care his mother promised to visit him but never did. Manson escaped to his mother but she rejected him and promptly brought him back to foster care. He escaped again but instead went to Indianapolis where he rented an apar tment and gained employment through sweeping sidewalks, washing windows, cleaning up garbage, and stealing in general. However, that ended when he was arrested in Peoria, Illinois looking for his relatives in a stolen car. Unfortunately, Mansons life was full arrests and jail-time. The boy was put in Indianapolis Juvenile Center after his mother rejected him once more. All throughout Mansons young life he would be beaten and raped at the facilities he would attend. His psychiatric profile reads almost like an open-book. His early childhood a waste, his mother neglectful, and his predilection to crime from a young age point to a seriously disturbed individual. Hes what would be called the LCP (Life Course Persistent) offender, and a Mission-Oriented Killer-believing that a certain person or group of people deserve to be killed. Mansons early actions seem minor but gradually become much worse-murder/conspiracy. Manson seeks to give the impression hes trying hard but puts forth no actual effort. Because of Mansons past he shows rejection, instability, and psychic trauma. Hes always striving for status so as to achieve some form of acceptance from love or affection-his need to sleep with so many women is a result of this insecure attachment to love and the need to be loved by mother. He also has homosexual and assaultive tendencies due to past abuses. Since Manson never knew his father that affected him greatly as well. He replaced his father with a desire to love and feel attached to his mother-the oedipal complex. However, his mother rejected him as both a man and as her son. Manson after being castrated mentally by his mother was left with a complex to constantly consume those around him. This was his attempt to be just like his mother, prostitute out young women-like his mother-get them pregnant and leave them behind. Which Manson successfully did. Three young children bearing his DNA born to him from three different women and all of them will never actually seem him. His need to abandon, just like his unknown father, and want to reject, because of his mother, leads him to become a very disturbed individual. Mansons behavior was less than respectful in his childhood to adulthood. He never received any education past the three-grade. He didnt understand what was right and wrong from an early age. He utilized everything he was taught on the street and was constantly in trouble even when he was young. More than likely, he had a Conduct Disorder because of how often young Manson was in trouble with Law Enforcement officials. He would move from Juvenile facility to Juvenile facility. He was never truly in one place his entire life. He was always wandering around-just like when he was with his mother. He could never settle down in one place for very long. The same is true for his adulthood. The longest place he stayed was at the Saphn Ranch and that was with his cult. Manson would be considered a sociopath committing crimes in his youth resulting in larger crimes in his adulthood. His inability to come to terms with himself as a person results in these insecurities which culminate in large-scale murders. These murders are a large part of his personalityextensions of his persona. These murders represent in some way all parts of himself and what he hates about himself. His behavior towards that end has been that of anger and frustration of not being able to do anything. So, all he can do his chop away at it. Like those dead bodies leave blood on the wall describing the ways in which he feels about himself and those around him. Pigs has meaning in more than just the political sense but also in the way in which he was born. The men which had sex with his mother might all be called pigs. Greed rising from that word because of her inability to make money anywhere else but through sex. He was left to watch as these pushed their way onto his mother, but s he heartedly accepted it for cash. His tendencies later on life would be to give the same treatment those men had given her to others in jail, institutions, wherever he was around with other men and in the advantage to destroy them sexually. After his repeated rapes in prison, and institutions, his latent homosexual urges thrust themselves onto men whom he was able to take advantage of easily. A psychiatrist determined he was unfit for a standard institution and needed treatment elsewhere. The young Manson didnt receive anything better where he went. He was still treated harshly only able to understand the reality with which he was taught-to be powerful is the key. He took that to heart when he formed his group. They killed for him, had sex with him, and had children with him. They never came to realize how lost they truly were by being seduced by him. However, that is who he preyed upon. Manson was skillful he knew who to touch. Not someone who was full of vigor, and willpower, but someone much like him-beaten, downtrodden, no place left to go, and insecure of attachments. The demographic he chased after was wealthy families whom he perceived as being better than everyone else, receiving more when everyone else had less, and so he in turn killed them and splayed their blood upon the walls in great defiance. Most deaths were of middle-aged males or females. Beyond their wealth and status, which he was trying to ac hieve by killing them, the demographic were constrained to Los Angeles and the districts therein-Topanga Canyon, Hollywood, Benedict Canyon, and Los Feliz areas. These were the wealthiest districts of Los Angeles, and often provided enough base for him to pick and choose who he wanted to kill. He often did not care for skin color but was especially prejudiced against blacks. He feared that they might come after him. The black panthers would kill him. He will always feel rejected and hurt and unloved. The only way he can supplement that is through pain and agony and giving it back. Though this man doesnt stand up against some of the more brutal murderers you come to realize that his psychological profile might very well fit with the rest of them-rejection, insecurity, sexual abuses. Nothing anyone can say couldve ever helped this child when he was young. The way he was brought up destroyed him inside and afterwards he never knew how to recuperate. His actions thus far have all been deeply rooted in his past, with his mother. The crimes he committed, are also atrocities , killing a woman even an unborn in cold-blood is disturbing. He didnt do the killing but he may as well have. His cold nature to just simply give an order and do it would be equal to killing that child yourself. However that a part of him, that is the ability to abandon those around him. He can so easily walk away from it all pretending as if nothing really matters because theyre the ones doing it not him. Thats exactly the kind of thing he tried to imply in court as well. That he, in fact, was not all that responsible. That he told them to kill people doesnt mean they had to. He felt that he wasnt guilty by association because of what they did. Obviously that didnt happen as one can still be convicted of murder given conspiracy and guilty parties in connection. We need to understand ourselves better so that we can easily accomplish the goals that we have set to achieve. The need to educate ourselves can never be outgrown. Learning is synonymous with life itself. While we are still breathing, we are learning. It remains with us until our last breath. I have always embraced challenges; they are wonderful occasions to educate myself and raise the awareness of my strengths and weaknesses. With a firm familiarity of my personal assets and liabilities I can make a distinction which areas of my life need to improve and which necessitate closure. I value optimism amidst adversity. I always try to discover the brighter side of life and think positive. I believe that things always happen for a reason. They are, in a way, interconnected to create the best that each one of can be. Challenges, problems, and difficulties are present in our lives to ultimately shape the best future for us. â€Å"Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant. † I have a strong penchant towards sports. The values that one can get out of playing basketball, soccer, or golf are remarkable and priceless. I begin to feel confident about my chances in other areas of my life. When I was in New Zealand, my homestay family owned a golf course. I had a great opportunity to play golf everyday. The sport taught me patience and self-discipline. It was enough to get me through six tournaments and propelled me to two victories. Winning two tournaments is quite a feat for my standards. In high school, I joined the basketball team. Like golf, the sport offered a whole inventory of merits and positive values. I have been playing as the starting forward since junior high school. Through countless ups and downs our team managed to keep our optimism and solid teamwork. There were times when taking the easy way out was unbelievably enticing but we fought with all we got to stay with the game. Hard work and determination tempered with faith in our abilities brought us out of our doubts. As a result, our high school team placed 9th in the national high school basketball level. Again, it was quite an accomplishment. Currently, I am a member of a soccer club here in America. I widely enjoyed playing the sport. Essentially, the values that I learned from the previous sports are the same but soccer provided me with additional values. The sport entails more discipline. It demands a more focused approach. Training and practice are extremely important to hone the basic skills necessary to successfully tackle the game. True enough, my team came in second place in the regional tournament. Practice truly makes perfect or as close to it as possible. Through soccer I met wonderful people that eventually became my best friends. A great friendship is a priceless investment. I see to it that I present the best of myself to people but not in a condescending way. I value my personal relationship with others. I am a very friendly person. I know its genuine meaning- true friends are going to be by your side through thick and thin. I discovered its true essence when I got ill and my best friend stayed with me and took care of me. Your friends will stand by you no matter what. They will praise your triumphs, overlook your failures, and point out your shortcomings. To fully become the person that you need to be, you must cultivate a sense of spirituality as well. You need to go beyond the superficialities of the physical and embrace the warmth and wisdom of the soul. I am a very religious person. I recognize the presence of a higher being that grants blessings and opportunities to everyone. I believe that ultimately everything will come to full circle and the spirit will triumph. Thus, I joined the praise team in my church. I know the essence of religion and how it helps shape true character. Each person is unique; everyone has something new to offer. I am a unique being and I have some good qualities that I can bring to the university. In the United States, prison overcrowding and budget cuts within the criminal justice system have lead to an increase in the need and the development of private prisons and jails. According to Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. (2010), â€Å"A private prison is a place in which individuals are physically confined by a third party that is contracted by a local, state, or federal government agency. Private prison companies typically enter into contractual agreements with local, state, or federal governments that commit prisoners and then pay a per diem or monthly rate for each prisoner confined in the facility† (Private Prisons, para. ). There are several advantages and disadvantages to private prisons and jails, as well as conflict. The government believes that contracting with reputable private firms is one way to cut cost in prisons and eliminate overcrowding. Studies have shown that private prison construction is 24% lower than state built systems (Reed, 2003). Along with cutting cost, a private facility will allow the government to increase housing capacities at a rapid rate. For example in Houston, Texas; a new Immigration and Naturalization Service facility was estimated to cost $26,000 per bed and built in 30 months through government construction (Reed, 2003). A private firm did the job at $14,000 per bed and took less than six months to build (Reed, 2003). With the cost of construction being decreased and time saved, overcrowding was also reduced. Private facilities can offer officials powerful tools to ensure good conduct (Segal, 2001). Private contracts can be a powerful tool against the abuse of authority. An effective performance-based facility will reward private firms for providing the care public officials require, and penalize firms for breaking such contract (Segal, 2001). Private firms can offer states more flexibility in planning and designing (Reed, 2003). A private firm will be forced to make the public’s safety and inmate’s treatment at a high priority to avoid negative attention. Many private prison and jail contracts specify a daily rate of reimbursements per prisoner. The private operator and the state would select a location where, the prison can be expanded if need be. The operation of a private facility could be managed by statutory authority, which is a nongovernmental unit, or public trust, pursuant to a contract with the United States. The statutory Authority could grant housing care and control of a minimum or medium security level prison owned or operated by a contractor (G.  J, 1998). Some disadvantages to privatizing prisons and jails are the deprivation of physical liberties and that the private sector would gain financially. When financial gain becomes the motive for operation the prison, competition begins and the quality of operation and care decreases. When quality decreases problems arise. The focus is lost and decreasing the operations of the prison can increase. With privatizing prisons the risk is run that companies may cut corners, make careless mistakes, and be understaffed. An understaffed prison presents a high risk for the officers as well as inmates and public safety in the event of an escape. One should ask will the private officers receive the same quality of training that government certified guards receive. Privately run prisons and jails will not provide the same quality of accountability in securing the surrounding communities. By privatizing the profit margin compromises public safety. Whether a prison is privately or publicly run one could identify advantages and disadvantages socially and logistically. Some believe by privatizing a prison a decline in new inmates would occur. This belief is based on the fact that private prisons would not offer the luxuries of public prisons. For example, public prisons and jails are governed by regulations to provide quality mental and medical care for the inmates. Inmates in public prisons are afforded a library, college educations, and many other amenities he or she could not afford on his or her own. Therefore many inmates consider public prison a vacation to obtain secured housing during different seasons as well as an opportunity to obtain quality medical care when he or she needs it. Today there are various debates concerning safeguarding a prisoner’s constitutional protected rights, and the states authority to abide by those rights in order to protect the state’s and citizen’s interest. The concern of the prisoner is that they are entitled to rights whether they are convicted offenders or suspected offenders. These rights include due process and everyone accused or found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt has such rights under the constitution of the United States. Contrary to this is the public interest as well as the state and policy makers that must abridge to make their state more efficient to serve public interest. One must understand that people make mistakes and are still held accountable for their actions. Even more so if one commits a crime, such as capital murder, rape, armed robbery, etc. they are breaking state and moral laws. Offenders that commit such crimes are all given due process and are entitled to a fair trial. If an offender found guilty and sentenced to prison, some constitutional rights should not be violated. However, there are rights that must be taken away. The first right taken is their freedom, which means that they will be incarcerated behind bars until their sentence is complete. This is the punishment itself; however, when some rights are taken away by the government then it becomes a violation under the constitutional law. When prisoners are in incarcerated they retain the right to humane treatment and have their basic needs fulfilled, regardless of their crimes. Prisons under state law must provide medical care for offenders, as well as making sure that they are in good health and are getting medical attention. Individuals that are incarcerated also have other rights in prisons that must be met some of these rights include, the right not to be punished cruelly or unusually, the rights to administrative appeals, the right to practice religion freely, the right to medical treatment (both long and short term), and the right to personal property such as: cigarettes, stationary, a watch, cosmetics, and snack food. Medical treatment includes treatment for diseases such as, cancer, HIV, TB, heart problems, high blood pressure, and other medical conditions one may encounter. The United States must obey by these rules to provide medical care, according to Fellner (2010): The first of the eleven principles in the United Nation’s (UN) Basic Principles for the Treatment of Prisoners states: All prisoners shall be treated with the respect due to their inherent dignity and value as human beings. † Respect for the dignity of patients is, of course, also central to medical ethics. Throughout the United States prisons and jails carry out their duties in order to have public appeal and serve in favor of the public interest. One must recognize that the states and policy makers must provide protection against prisoners even while they are incarcerated. Although prisoners have rights some are lost in order to maintain order in prisons, discipline, and security. These behaviors include fighting with other inmates, disrespecting correctional officers, and involvement in illegal activity. The state must run an institution that is not only fair but that does not accept inappropriate behavior. Inmates that are convicted have a term to serve and must look at the prison lifestyle as a punishment, thus showing the outside world the consequences when a crime is committed. When an offender is convicted for a felony crime he or she loses rights that we abuse such the right vote and serve in political office. The outcome varies by state. The fact remains that even after an inmate has served his or her time in prison, they will continue to have state and public interest in their way to fall full a normal life as they are labeled with a stigma. Jrank. org (n. d. ): With respect to the states, the Tenth Amendment provides that â€Å"[t]he powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. † In other words, the states retain their â€Å"police power† to enact laws for the health, safety, and welfare of their citizens (Present-Day Relationship between National Government & States, para. ). There are many remedies to the conflict of deriving from private prisons and jails. Remedies depend upon personal opinion and public interest. Politicians for the most part argue that private prisons and jails are an extra expenditure that the governments can do away with. In contrast, a political view may that not having to build new facilities can save money. A civilian employee working within the corrections system may argue that the staff at a private facility may not be trained as efficiently as one trained by the state or county. This can be combated if governments adopt a policy such as that used in the State of Florida. All state corrections officers whether employed at a public or private facility receive the same training at a state accredited correctional training facility, overseen by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The conflict of most concern would be the rights of prisoners; How to maintain an orderly correctional facility and not impede on the Constitutional rights of inmates. In all facilities the civil rights of inmates are an issue. It is all too easy to violate the civil rights of an inmate. To remedy this conflict facility administration need to ensure that their staff is aware of the limited rights of inmates as well as the consequences for the violation of those rights. In conclusion, the use of private prisons and jails come with advantages and disadvantages as does anything. The use of such facilities can save governments money. The use of the same such facilities can raise concern. The public safety and the fair treatment of prisoners is the ultimate goal and should be considered at all costs.
